GreenSkate
Tuesday, April 22, 2008, Spokane skateboarders turned out en masse for Spokane's first GreenSkate event. GreenSkate started in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, as a way to encourage longboarding as a form of carbon-free transportation. Would Spokane's skateboarding community take the challenge?
The answer was a resounding YES as more than 35 people took an STA bus up to 29th and then skated downhill to the UTF skate park, combining two eco-friendly forms of transportation into one fun event. Bus drivers had never seen so many skateboarders mob an STA bus before, and were incredibly welcoming. Every bus at the Plaza changed the message on the front of the bus to read "Welcome Skaters!"
Most of the group took the bus up a second time before joining everyone at the park for a BBQ. Special thanks to Dean-o for making sure all the dogs had matching buns.
While most of us already enjoy skating around town, doing it as a group is a rare event. It was great to share tips, tools and conversation as we carved the streets. Spokane's GreenSkate goes to show that every day can be a green day in the Lilac City. Everyone who attended said they would like to attend more events like this and that's what we are all about. Check this site regularly for details on upcoming events or post your own. |
